Message from the President of Hanoi University of Science and Technology

“ADVANCING INTO A NEW ERA: BUILDING ON A PROUD 70-YEAR LEGACY”

Thông điệp của Giám đốc Đại học
Prof. Le Anh Tuan, President of Hanoi University of Science and Technology

As Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST) marks its 70th anniversary (1956–2026), we celebrate a legacy shaped by the intellect, resilience, and dedication of generations of faculty members, staff, students, and alumni. From the time it first laid the foundations of engineering and technological education in Vietnam to the present, HUST has remained at the forefront of training highly qualified professionals, advancing scientific research, pioneering new technologies, fostering innovation, and contributing to national development and prosperity.

HUST’s history has never been defined by complacency with past achievements. Every stage of the University’s development has been driven by a determination to advance, a pioneering spirit, and the courage to embrace change. Our responsibility is not only to preserve the 70-year legacy entrusted to us, but also to build upon it and create the HUST of the future: a university that is more modern, more innovative, more globally connected, and more influential in Viet Nam and the world.

We are living in an era in which science, technology, and innovation have become decisive drivers of national competitiveness. Data science and artificial intelligence, semiconductors, automation and robotics, advanced materials, green energy, biotechnology, and other foundational technologies are transforming industries, economies, and societies at an unprecedented pace. In this rapidly evolving world, the role of universities is undergoing profound change.

A university is not merely a place where knowledge is transmitted. It is where new knowledge is created, technological advances take shape, and individuals are empowered to lead change and address the most pressing challenges facing their nation and humanity.

Ultimately, the value of a university is measured not only by the size of its student body or its position in global rankings, but also by its meaningful contributions to national development and its positive impact on society.

This is precisely the mission that HUST has embraced and continues to pursue.

HUST (1)

As Viet Nam embarks on a new chapter of national progress, with science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation identified as the primary drivers of growth, HUST is acutely aware of its responsibility to cultivate talent, develop a highly skilled workforce in strategic fields, generate new knowledge and technologies, strengthen the national innovation ecosystem, and contribute to elevating Viet Nam’s scientific and technological standing on the global stage.

Our aspiration today is to build HUST into an outstanding research and innovation university, where talented people come together, bold ideas are nurtured, breakthrough technologies emerge, and high-impact solutions are delivered to support the country’s sustainable development.

HUST’s strategic objectives, including ranking among Asia’s top 100–150 universities with a world’s top 100 univeristy ranking by subject, and strengthening its position as Viet Nam’s leading centre for talent development, research, and innovation, are not ends in themselves. Rather, they are the natural outcomes of an unwavering commitment to academic excellence, international standards, and meaningful impact.

To realise these targets, the 2026–2030 period will be pivotal in laying the foundation for the university’s next phase of growth. We envision HUST as a university that is resolute in preserving its traditions and culture, yet more open to the world, more agile in adapting to change, more innovative in driving transformation, and supported by more modern governance that fully harnesses collective intelligence and individual creativity.

Key priorities for the 2026–2030 period include implementing modern, transparent governance under an AI-First University model, leveraging data and artificial intelligence to enhance education, research, and administrative effectiveness while progressively developing a Digital Twin Campus; upgrading infrastructure, with a particular focus on advanced computing capabilities, alongside the modernisation of teaching and research facilities; establishing new Centres of Excellence (CoEs); bringing HUST's second campus in Hung Yen into full operation as a hub for a dynamic and sustainable Triple Helix ecosystem connecting academia, industry, and government; further empowering academic units through greater decentralisation and delegated authority; introducing a remuneration framework that attracts talent and drives breakthroughs in science, technology, and innovation; significantly increasing the proportion of postgraduate students and international faculty and students, as well as the share of revenue generated by science, technology, and innovation activities; inaugurating an interdisciplinary innovation space that will serve as a flagship model for innovation ecosystems across higher education institutions; and completing the organisational model and development strategy of the BK-Holdings enterprise system.

Alongside these strategic priorities, HUST aspires to foster a strong academic culture grounded in integrity, guided by academic freedom coupled with accountability, committed to excellence, and propelled by innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, academia–industry–government partnership, and internationalisation.

Every significant achievement begins with intellect, courage, a pioneering spirit, and a shared willingness to embrace change, take action, and accept responsibility. The journey ahead will undoubtedly present difficulties and challenges. Yet HUST’s history has never been written by taking the easy path. It is precisely at defining moments that the HUST’ spirit has empowered our community to transform challenges into opportunities and aspirations into reality.

As President of HUST, I am committed to fostering a university where promising ideas are encouraged, talent is acknowledged and nurtured, and meaningful contributions are valued. I am equally committed to advancing a modern approach to university governance: people-centred and data-driven; transparent and accountable; goal- and results-oriented; decentralised and empowering; collaborative and innovative; adaptive and agile; and dedicated to continuous improvement. At the same time, I will remain open-minded, listen attentively, and take full responsibility for my decisions.

Above all, I hope that all staff members, faculty members, researchers, students, and alumni will continue to uphold the pioneering spirit that has defined the University’s identity for seven decades. HUST's success has never been the work of any one individual or any single unit; it is the result of the unity, trust, and collective responsibility of the entire HUST’s community.

I firmly believe that, building on our proud 70-year tradition and drawing on the intellect, resilience, innovative spirit, and dedication of every member of the HUST’s community, we will work together to build a modern and autonomous HUST that commands respect and exerts influence across the region and the world.
