Message from the President of Hanoi University of Science and Technology
Hanoi University of Science and Technology is approaching the milestone of its 70th anniversary (1956–2026), marking a journey shaped by the intellect, resolve, and dedication of generations of faculty members, staff, students, and alumni.
From its earliest days laying the foundations for engineering education in Vietnam to the present, HUST has consistently played a pioneering role in developing highly qualified talent, conducting scientific research, advancing technology, and promoting innovation. In doing so, it has made significant contributions to national development and defense.
The history of Hanoi University of Science and Technology has never been shaped by complacency over past achievements. Every stage of the University’s development has begun with an aspiration to advance, a pioneering spirit, and the courage to embrace change.
The responsibility of our generation is to carry forward this 70-year legacy and build the HUST of the future—one that is more modern, more innovative, more deeply connected to the world, and more influential both in Vietnam and internationally.
We are living in an era in which science, technology, and innovation have become decisive drivers of national competitiveness. Data technologies and artificial intelligence, semiconductors, automation and robotics, advanced materials, green energy, biotechnology, and other foundational technologies are profoundly transforming modes of production, governance, and social life.
Against this backdrop, the role of universities is also being fundamentally reshaped.
A university is not merely a place where knowledge is imparted. It must also create new knowledge, develop new technologies, and nurture people capable of leading change and addressing the major challenges facing their nation and humanity.
The value of a university is measured not only by its student population or its position in international rankings, but also by its tangible contributions to national development and its positive impact on society.
This is precisely the mission that Hanoi University of Science and Technology has chosen to pursue.
As Vietnam enters a new stage of development, with science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation identified as the principal engines of growth, HUST is deeply aware of its responsibility to nurture talent, develop a strategic workforce, create knowledge and technology, strengthen the national innovation ecosystem, and help elevate Vietnam’s scientific and technological standing internationally.
Our aspiration today is to develop Hanoi University of Science and Technology into a university of excellence in research and innovation: a hub for talent, a place where bold ideas are nurtured, new technologies are developed, and valuable solutions are created in support of the country’s sustainable development.
Strategic goals such as ranking among Asia’s top 100–150 universities, placing selected disciplines among the world’s top 100, and becoming Vietnam’s leading center for talent development, research, and innovation are not ends in themselves.
Rather, they should be the natural outcomes of our sustained pursuit of quality, international standards, and genuine, lasting value.
To realize this aspiration, the 2026–2030 period will be pivotal, laying the foundations for a new stage in HUST’s development.
We need a HUST with the resolve to preserve its traditions and culture, while becoming more open to global engagement, more flexible in adapting to change, more innovative in leading transformation, and more modern in its governance. Such governance must enable the University to unlock the collective intelligence of its community and the creative potential of every individual.
Key priorities for the 2026–2030 period include implementing modern and transparent governance under an AI-First University model. This model will be data-driven and AI-enabled, improving the effectiveness of education, research, and administrative management while gradually supporting the development of a Digital Twin Campus.
The University will upgrade its infrastructure, with particular attention to computing capacity, and modernize facilities for education and research. It will also establish new Centers of Excellence.
HUST’s second campus in Hưng Yên will be brought into effective operation as a hub for a dynamic and sustainable triple-helix ecosystem linking universities, industry, and government.
Greater authority will be delegated to academic units. A new salary and remuneration model will be introduced to attract talent and promote breakthroughs in science, technology, and innovation.
The University will seek substantial improvements in key indicators, including the proportion of postgraduate students in total enrollment, the proportion of international faculty members and students, and the share of revenue generated through science, technology, and innovation activities.
An interdisciplinary innovation space will be inaugurated and developed into a leading model for innovation ecosystems within higher education institutions. The University will also refine the organizational model and development strategy of the BK-Holdings network of enterprises.
Alongside these objectives, HUST seeks to foster a strong academic culture founded on integrity, guided by academic freedom accompanied by accountability, and committed to excellence as its defining standard.
Innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, triple-helix partnerships, and internationalization will serve as key drivers of the University’s development.
Every major advance begins with intellect, resolve, unity, a pioneering spirit, and the courage to innovate, act, and accept responsibility.
The road ahead will undoubtedly present many difficulties and challenges. Yet the history of Hanoi University of Science and Technology has never been written through easy choices.
It is at decisive turning points that the HUST spirit has always emerged most powerfully, enabling us to turn challenges into opportunities and aspirations into reality.
In my capacity as President, I am committed to building a university environment in which every worthwhile idea is heard, every talented individual has the opportunity to flourish, and every contribution receives the recognition it deserves.
I am also committed to consistently pursuing the principles of modern governance: putting people at the center; making decisions based on data; ensuring transparency and accountability; focusing on objectives and results; promoting decentralization and empowerment; encouraging collaboration and innovation; remaining adaptable and flexible; and pursuing continuous improvement.
At the same time, I will remain open to learning and feedback, listen attentively, and accept responsibility for my decisions.
I hope that every member of staff and faculty, every scientist, every student, and every alumnus will continue to nurture the pioneering spirit that has shaped HUST’s identity throughout the past 70 years.
The University’s success belongs neither to any one individual nor to any single unit. It is the result of the unity, trust, and shared responsibility of the entire HUST community.
I firmly believe that, drawing on our proud 70-year tradition and on the intellect, resolve, innovative spirit, and aspiration to contribute of every member of the HUST community, we will together build a modern, autonomous, and humanistic Hanoi University of Science and Technology—one with respected standing and far-reaching influence across the region and throughout the world.
