Upgrading in University Status

On March 17, 2023, Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Kim Son declared the decision to elevate Hanoi University of Science and Technology to a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary research university. This transformation was accompanied by the formal recognition of the University Council, Chairman of the University Council, and President for the 2020-2025 term. Minister Nguyen Kim Son applauded the university's development strategy, emphasizing the importance of adapting to foster growth. He emphasized "When the old mold, shell, and shirt have become narrow, it needs to be transformed to develop. The word "truong dai hoc" and the word "Dai hoc" are just words but have a huge difference, demonstrating the choice of a development model in accordance with the provisions of law. Congratulations are not for a name but for the development of Hanoi University of Science and Technology."

In the course of 2023, the university also underwent significant organizational and personnel restructuring to enhance operational efficiency. This included the establishment of three new service and support centers, a shift in the model of four schools to faculties under the University, and the creation of two new schools: the School of Chemistry and Life Sciences and the School of Materials Sciences. The restructuring aimed to provide fresh avenues for learning and research.

Inauguration of Building C7

On June 22, 2023, the inauguration of Building C7 marked a milestone under the SAHEP Project. This construction, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, contributes to the enhancement of training quality, research capacity, and administrative efficiency. Covering an area of approximately 40,000 m2, Building C7 accommodates 30 laboratories catering to training and research needs.

The building houses offices, research rooms, laboratories, and function rooms for the School of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, the School of Mechanical Engineering, and various faculties and institutes. This infrastructure upgrade fosters a conducive environment for creativity among faculty and students. The incorporation of modern laboratories has led to more effective teaching, improved student comprehension, and heightened research quality. Notably, over 85% of Hanoi University of Science and Technology students secure employment within 12 months of graduation.

Meeting International Accreditation Standards

In 2023, Hanoi University of Science and Technology actively engages with esteemed accreditation organizations, such as the High Council for Evaluation of Research and Higher Education (HCERES - France) and the ASEAN University Network-Quality Assurance (AUN-QA), to fortify its commitment to delivering high-quality education, fostering research, and driving innovation for the betterment of the community and society.

During November 2023, HCERES (France) conducted a meticulous assessment at the grassroots level within Hanoi University of Science and Technology. The evaluation involved comprehensive discussions with the Board of Presidents, Directors of various departments, and Deans of Schools. These sessions centered on exchanging information about the University's mission, vision, strategy, governance, and quality enhancement initiatives following the previous accreditation in 2017.

Subsequently, the Evaluation Team conducted 19 direct, open interview sessions with relevant stakeholders and carried out two survey sessions, physically inspecting the facilities and laboratories to ensure a thorough assessment of the University's quality and quality assurance conditions.

Concurrently, experts from AUN-QA acknowledged Hanoi University of Science and Technology for its training programs, commending the institution for upholding a longstanding academic reputation with a commitment to meeting output standards. The university boasts a diverse and innovative teaching and learning methodology across its more than 60 training programs, with an impressive 95% meeting accreditation criteria and 65% meeting international accreditation standards.

Furthermore, the feedback from employers underscores the effectiveness of the university's programs, with over 95% of graduates securing employment or pursuing advanced studies immediately after graduation. These commendations from reputable international accreditation bodies affirm that Hanoi University of Science and Technology is steadfastly aligned with its goals and mission.

In October 2023, Associate Professor Huynh Quyet Thang, the President of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, took a significant step by signing a Memorandum of Alliance Cooperation. This collaborative initiative focuses on the development of high-quality human resources within the semiconductor chip industry. The alliance involves strategic partnerships with leaders from Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City; Vietnam National University, Hanoi; University of Da Nang; and the Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology.

Notably, throughout 2023, several internationally funded scientific research projects conducted by researchers at Hanoi University of Science and Technology have yielded highly practical outcomes in the field of semiconductors. Among them:

  • Research Project on Doping 1D and 2D Materials: Professor Nguyen Duc Hoa, Vice Dean of the School of Materials Sciences, spearheaded a project titled "Doping 1D and 2D materials towards developing electronic components and nano gas sensors: Understanding basic properties towards applications in environmental monitoring and breath analysis." This research received sponsorship from the Asia Office for Space R&D Research of the US Air Force, amounting to over $200,000 for a three-year research period. The project has resulted in groundbreaking scientific discoveries and technological solutions, extensively shared within the academic and scientific communities.

  • Research Project on Hand Gesture Recognition: Another significant project, "Hand gesture recognition using multimodal sensors based on intelligent edge computing, applied in human-machine interaction," was sponsored by the AFOSR Research Fund (Office of Scientific Research, US Air Force). Led by Associate Professor Tran Thi Thanh Hai from the School of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, this research team has made notable advancements in the exploration and production of multi-modal wearable sensors and gesture recognition technologies. These innovations find practical applications in human-device interaction within smart environments.

Another significant collaboration is with Naver Technology Group, which sponsored the HUST-NAVER AI Training Space.

Enterprise Semester Program: In 2023, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, in collaboration with key business partners, intensified efforts in the "Enterprise Semester" within the 180-credit Bachelor - Engineering Integrated Program. Establishment of the BK Fintech
Establishment of Three Centers: Catalyzing Research, Technology Transfer, and Industry Collaboration 
 
In January 2023, HUST unveiled the Center for Technology and Digital Economy, also known as BK Fintech. Positioned as a frontrunner in national research, this center is committed to advancing Vietnam's digital economy and society through cutting-edge research, development, and the application of Industry 4.0 technologies. The collaboration involves researchers and students from key units, including the School of Information and Communications Technology, the School of Economics and Management, and the School of Applied Mathematics and Informatics. 
Establishment of the Welding and Joining Technology Research Center 
In the same month, the Welding and Joining Technology Research Center emerged as a pivotal research hub within the School of Mechanical Engineering, supported by a substantial budget of 550 million Yen from the Government of Japan. Comprising three laboratories focused on Welding Process, Welding Metallurgy, and Welding Physics, this center aims to fortify HUST's research capabilities in welding technology.

October 2023 marked the establishment of the Center for Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship, reinforcing HUST's commitment to nurturing and inspiring student entrepreneurship. This center orchestrates diverse activities across various university units, fostering an environment that stimulates creativity and the implementation of innovative solutions. Enrollment Triumphs in 2023: Setting Records and Inspiring Aspirations

The 2023 admission season marked a resounding success for Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST), showcasing remarkable numbers that underscore its popularity and the deep interest of aspiring students.

HUST set an ambitious target of admitting 8,555 students for the 2023 enrollment period. The response was overwhelming, with over 34,000 candidates registering—an impressive ratio of 1 to 4. The sheer volume of interest demonstrated the allure of HUST's academic offerings.

The total number of aspirational registrations reached nearly 89,000, emphasizing the university's widespread appeal. Impressively, 63 out of 63 training programs recorded a surge in pre-admission registrations, exceeding 400%. With almost 16,000 candidates expressing their first wish for HUST, the university witnessed an exceptional level of interest. This surpassed the university's initial target of 8,000 students, reflecting an aspirational index of nearly 200%.

In terms of actual admissions, the university welcomed nearly 8,700 students, surpassing the set target by an impressive 102%. This demonstrated not only the university's desirability but also its commitment to accommodating a diverse pool of talented students.

The enrollment methods for 2023 showcased a balanced approach. The Talent Selection method constituted 20%, while the method of considering test scores, including the Thinking Skills Assessment and National High School Graduation Exam, held a dominant share of 80%.

HUST continues to enhance its facilities, ensuring a conducive learning environment. The university is actively promoting the Thinking Skills Assessment, reinforcing resources for HUST's industries and training programs. These strategic steps not only set the stage for a successful 2024 enrollment but also underscore HUST's foresight and readiness for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in the 2025 enrollment season.

In March 2023, the esteemed British organization Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) unveiled its highly anticipated QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023. Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST) secured its position among the world's elite institutions, placing in the 401-450 range in the distinguished field of Engineering and Technology.

This year, HUST demonstrated commendable progress in research indicators across various subjects, with a notable achievement in the number of citations/articles—a testament to the university's impactful contributions to the academic landscape.

Subject-specific Accolades:

  • Mechanical, Aerospace, and Manufacturing Engineering: Maintaining its top spot in Vietnam, HUST's Mechanical, Aerospace, and Manufacturing Engineering subject claimed a position among the best 401-450 in the world.

  • Electrical - Electronics, Computer Science, and Information Systems: These vital disciplines secured rankings of 351-400 and 451-500 globally, underlining HUST's prowess in technology-related domains.

  • Mathematics: Continuing its consistent presence in the rankings for the third consecutive year, HUST's Mathematics group retained its standing at 351-400 worldwide.

QS stands as one of the premier university ranking organizations globally, alongside Times Higher Education (UK) and Academic Ranking of World Universities (China). This recognition underscores HUST's commitment to academic excellence and its growing influence on the global stage.
