Inauguration of Joining & Welding Research Institute HUST-UOsaka
On November 29, Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST) celebrated the inauguration of the Joining & Welding Research Institute HUST-UOsaka, marking a significant milestone in international cooperation for scientific research and technology development.

The Joining & Welding Research Institute HUST-UOsaka is within the framework of the project "Strengthening research capacity in welding for HUST - Vietnam" with a total grant of 550 million yen from the Government of Japan. It was established under the School of Mechanical Engineering, HUST with 3 laboratories: Welding Process, Welding Metallurgy and Welding Physics. The institute is expected to be a hub for expertise and innovation from both Japanese and Vietnamese specialists, aiming to advance welding technology in Vietnam during Industry 4.0.

Sustainable collaboration between HUST and international partners

At the ceremony, Assoc. Prof. Huynh Dang Chinh, Vice President of HUST, emphasized the significance of the Joining & Welding Research Institute HUST-UOsaka in the sustainable collaboration between HUST and international partners, especially Osaka University. “The institute is expected to lead in welding technology research and development, meeting the growing demands of key industries,” affirmed the Vice President of HUST.

Japanese Ambassador to Vietnam Ito Naoki praised the collaboration between HUST and Osaka University. He believes that the research institute would play a key role in training top talent and drive the future development of Vietnam.

Mr. Manabu Tanaka, Executive Vice President of Osaka University, stated that the institute aims to become a global leader in welding technology research, on par with renowned organizations like TWI (UK), Edison Welding Institute (USA), and the Joining and Welding Research Institute of Osaka University. Notably, it is the first center in Southeast Asia with advanced technology, promising significant contributions to the technological and industrial development in Vietnam and ASEAN.

In November 2023, Japan and Vietnam upgraded to be Comprehensive Strategic Partners. By March 2024, Phase 1 of their Joint Initiative launched, focusing on high-quality human resource training and supporting industry development in Vietnam. This collaboration enhances training and research in joining and welding technologies between HUST and Osaka University.

Applications of welding technology in 3 key technological sectors 

The Joining & Welding Research Institute HUST-UOsaka focuses on scientific research, technology transfer, and undergraduate and graduate training. The outcomes include technology transfer, increased publications in prestigious international journals, improved graduate education, and enhanced global rankings for HUST.

The institute aims to develop and apply welding technology in three key sectors:
  • Wind energy industry: Welding technology ensures the durability and safety of big wind turbine towers.
  • Semiconductor industry: Precision welding plays a critical role in chip manufacturing processes.
  • High-speed rail construction: Welding techniques require high precision and superior load-bearing capacity for rail infrastructure.

The Joining & Welding Research Institute HUST-UOsaka was established as a result of ongoing collaboration since 2013 between the Department of Welding and Metal Technology, School of Mechanical Engineering, HUST and the Joining and Welding Research Institute, Osaka University. After over a decade of strong cooperation and friendship, the institute represents a new milestone in advancing research and training experts in welding and joining technology for both nations.
