On 23rd & 24th November 2017, Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST), in collaboration with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the ASEAN-European Academic University Network (ASEA-UNINET), organized the workshop on “Industrial Revolution 4.0: Current Trends and Development Strategies”. The workshop attracted 120 delegates to discuss and give analysis of the opportunities and challenges faced by the Industry 4.0 for scientific and technological research. The workshop then focused on finding solutions for the training matters in the context of the strong development of the Industry Revolution 4.0.

The concept “Industry 4.0” (or Smart Factory) was first introduced at the Hannover Industrial Fair in Germany in 2011. “Industry 4.0” is the current trend in automation and data exchange in manufacturing technologies, including Cyber-physical systems, Internet of Things (IoT), Cloud computing, and Cognitive computing.

At the workshop, a variety of aspects of the Industry 4.0 have been highlighted: Security, Reliability, Networking and Technical processes, with a particular focus on the important connection between information technology and manufacturing. A numerous topics have been discussed among scientists: Overview of the Industrial Revolution 4.0 and Basic Concepts; Trend of IoT Connectivity in Industry 4.0; Challenges and Solutions for Model-based techniques in Industry 4.0; Digital Factory - Competitive Capacity; IoT for a Smarter Factory - A Practical Approach to the Industry 4.0; Industry 4.0 - Challenges and Opportunities for Vietnamese universities, research institutes and enterprises, etc...
Addressing at the workshop, Assoc. Prof. Hoang Minh Son – President of HUST assumed that the Industry Revolution 4.0 will have an impact on all countries, enterprises, educational institutions and people over the world. The organization of this workshop aims to strengthen the link between University and Industry as well as International university partners in order to bring effective applications for the development of science and technology in Vietnam. Assoc. Prof. Hoang Minh Son also emphasized: "Being one of the leading technical universities in Vietnam, HUST has great interests in promoting education, research and transfer technology in the field of industry. I do hope this workshop will give all participants a platform for the Industry Revolution 4.0, to discuss and exchange, and to create a network of researchers in a variety of fields. to find an effective solution for the Industry 4.0.”

Delegates have all agreed that we need a more comprehensive and multi-dimensional view, as well as a reasonable approach to capture the opportunity for improving the status of individuals, organizations and nations to not be left behind in this revolution. Prof. Reiner Anderl from Darmstadt University of Technology affirmed that like other developing countries, Vietnam had challenges and opportunities in the Industry 4.0 and that in order to maximize opportunities and minimize the negative impacts of the Industry Revolution 4.0, a reasonable development strategy was needed”.

Prof. Reiner Anderl - Darmstadt University of Technology (Germany) reported at the workshop

At the workshop, delegates also assumed that in the era of the Industry Revolution 4.0, a lot of jobs will disappear but the new ones will be born. In the face of this tendency when automated machines replace to human beings, the human resources must be equipped with the knowledge and appropriate skills to meet the requirements of the new situation. That is why, how to train the human resources to meet the current economy’s requirement becomes a true exigency, how to build up and renovate the training programs is an urgent task of each Higher Education Institution. Additionally, another solution was also raised up by the delegates: The strengthening of cooperation among Universities, Scientists and Industry to offer high-quality human resource training to meet the requirements of the Industry Revolution 4.0.
